How the bullion calculator works
Spot price × weight in troy ounces × purity = bullion value. The math is simple, but unit conversion trips most people up. This tool handles grams, troy ounces, avoirdupois ounces, pennyweight, grains and kilograms — and lets you stack multiple lines for mixed inventory.
How it works
- 1Pick a metal (gold, silver, platinum or palladium).
- 2Enter weight and choose the unit. Use grams for digital scales, dwt for jewelry, troy oz for bars.
- 3Set purity to 100 for fine bullion. Reduce for jewelry or alloyed items.
- 4Add more lines for a mixed stack; the sidebar shows your grand total.
Frequently asked questions
FAQWhat's the difference between a troy ounce and a regular ounce?
A troy ounce (ozt) is 31.1035 grams; an avoirdupois ounce (the everyday 'oz' for groceries) is 28.3495 grams. All precious-metal prices are quoted per troy ounce. This calculator converts both automatically.
What is a pennyweight (dwt)?
1 pennyweight = 1/20 of a troy ounce = 1.55517 grams. It's a standard unit in the jewelry and dental gold trade. The calculator accepts dwt directly.
How do I value a bar of .9999 fine gold?
Choose 'Gold (Au)', enter the weight, pick the unit, and set purity to 100 (since .9999 ≈ 100%). The result is gold spot × weight in troy ounces.
Does this calculator account for dealer premium?
No — this is melt / intrinsic value only. Retail bars and rounds typically sell for spot + a premium (a few percent for kilo bars, more for fractional sizes). Use this number as your reference floor.
Are platinum and palladium prices live?
Yes. All four metals refresh from a public spot feed every 60 seconds. You can also override the spot price for any metal to model a scenario.
